1. General information
The goal of this subject is for the student to learn to communicate appropriately and accurately in oral and written form , adapting to the audience and the purpose of the discourse in different professional and academic contexts, and to develop appropriate oral and written communication strategies and techniques in English to prepare, process, interpret and present data. It is recommended to have a B1 level of English.
These approaches and goals are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 4, 5, 10, 16 and 17 (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/ ), so that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to their achievement.
2. Learning results
- Know and use technical terminology relevant to their academic and professional context.
- Use with a reasonable level of accuracy the most common functions and grammatical structures in technical communication .
- Understand technical documents, grasping their content with relative ease, to find specific information and use it selectively .
- Write documents in specific academic and professional contexts, with an intermediate level of language proficiency (using the conventions associated with different text types and showing a reasonable variety and correctness of grammatical structures, vocabulary and linking words).
- Make oral presentations on topics of their specialty, showing an intermediate level of proficiency in the language (with some fluency and with grammatical and terminological correctness) and/or participate in other oral interactions in their professional field, such as negotiations and telephone conversations, understanding their interlocutors and expressing themselves with clarity and reasonable accuracy.
- Given that this specific English subject starts at a level of B1 (of the European Framework of Reference for Languages), at the end of the subject students will reach a level higher than this.
3. Syllabus
BLOCK 1: Terminology and functions specific to the technical field.
BLOCK 2: Writing and comprehension of professional and academic documents.
BLOCK 3: Oral communication in professional and academic contexts.
4. Academic activities
a) Participative master classes: 15 hours
Presentation of the concepts related to the use of English and in particular technical English (vocabulary, grammar, use of the language)
b) Practical activities: 20 hours
Carrying out didactic activities oriented towards the development of oral communication skills in English in academic and professional environments.
c) Individual and group tutoring: 8 hours
Advice and supervision in the realization of the activities of learning communication in English and technical English
d) Self-learning: 45 hours
Personal and autonomous study.
e) Other autonomous activities: 5 hours
Use of bibliographic and computer tools, participation in the virtual learning environment. f) Assessment tests: 7 hours
5. Assessment system
The subject will be assessed by the continuous assessment system by means of the following activities:
- Intermediate test (70% of the grade).
It will consist of a written test where the different communicative skills will be assessed through activities with the exception of the communicative skills with the exception oforal production.
- Practice (30% of the grade).
Oral expression activities related to the aspects seen in the practical sessions.
Assessment criteria are as follows:
- The appropriate application of the theoretical knowledge acquired and the correct use of the English language in academic and professional contexts.
- The communicative strategies employed.
- Prior preparation for the practice.
- Student autonomy and participation.
If the student has not passed these activities during the semester, he/she will have the opportunity to pass the subject by means of a global test in two official calls.
